Origin and Initial Construction of the Bridge of Saint Dominic of the Causeway

In the 11th century, pilgrims faced difficulties crossing the Oja River due to the lack of a safe crossing. Saint Dominic of the Causeway, seeing these challenges, decided to build a bridge to improve the safety and accessibility of the Camino de Santiago. The first structure, erected around 1040, combined stone piers with a wooden deck. Later, between 1044 and 1047, an entirely stone bridge was built, possibly with 24 or 25 semicircular arches and triangular cutwaters, features common to the architecture of the time.

Evolution and Upkeep Over the Centuries

Over the centuries, the bridge suffered damage from river floods and natural wear, requiring multiple repairs and reconstructions. In the 15th century, the Catholic Monarchs granted the city tax privileges in exchange for a commitment to keep the bridge in good condition. In 1561, a flood destroyed several piers and arches, and the bridge was restored by master builder Juan Ochoa de Arranotegui. Work continued in the following centuries, with a significant restoration in 1775 after another flood seriously damaged the structure.

19th-Century Transformations

During the 19th century, the bridge underwent substantial changes. Between 1861 and 1864, with the construction of the road from Burgos to Logrono, part of the old Camino de Santiago’s route was used, reusing and reworking existing structures. In 1862, engineer Ricardo Bellsola proposed underpinning the right-bank abutment, which lacked proper foundations. The bridge was later widened with flat stone arches added downstream, resting on the spurs of the original structure. These changes reduced the number of arches from 24 to 16 and widened the deck, adapting the bridge to contemporary needs without losing its historical essence.

The Bridge of Saint Dominic of the Causeway has been essential to the Jacobean Route, easing the passage of thousands of pilgrims over the centuries.
