Although there is no conclusive evidence of a Roman origin for the Bridge of Saint Mark the Evangelist, its strategic location over the Bernesga River suggests the possibility of an early structure dating to the time of the Legio VII Gemina. The first documented mention of the bridge dates from 1152, when Sancha Raimundez, sister of King Alfonso VII, donated the bridge and its surroundings to archdeacon Don Arias, for the purpose of building a church, a hospital for pilgrims and housing for those maintaining the bridge.

Evolution Over the Centuries

Over the centuries, the bridge has undergone various reconstructions and repairs due to flood damage and the passage of time. In the 16th century, under the direction of Leonardo de la Cajiga, a significant reconstruction was carried out that gave it much of its current appearance.

Restoration and Conservation

Throughout the 20th century, the bridge has undergone various interventions aimed at its conservation and adaptation to contemporary needs. In 1975, a careful expansion moved the bridge downstream to adapt it to modern needs, while preserving its historical and architectural integrity.

This variability in the arches not only adds a distinctive character to the bridge, but also reflects the construction techniques of the time.

Notable Features

Among the most notable architectural features are the stone parapets and the carved corbels supporting an iron railing. These details not only serve a structural purpose, but also add significant aesthetic value to the whole.

Today, the Bridge of Saint Mark the Evangelist is a pedestrian structure connecting the two banks of the Bernesga River. Its proximity to the former Hospital de San Marcos, now converted into a National Parador and the Convent of Saint Mark the Evangelist León, makes it a point of interest for both tourists and pilgrims walking the Camino de Santiago Frances.
