The Church of Our Lady of the Assumption, located in Boadilla del Camino (Palencia Province), is a notable example of the religious heritage linked to the Camino de Santiago Frances. It was built between the 16th and 17th centuries, though the vaults were not completed until 1770. The temple stands on the site of an old Romanesque church, traces of which survive in the base of the tower and a 13th-century baptismal font.

The church has a three-nave floor plan separated by pillars, with groin vaults and a triple east end covered by a star-ribbed vault. The tower, located at the head of the Gospel-side nave, consists of three stone tiers. The sacristy is located in the Epistle-side nave, notable for its Rococo cabinetry.

Notable Artistic Features

• Main altarpiece: A 16th-century Renaissance work by Pedro de Flandes, Mateo Lancrin and Juan de Cambray. It consists of a predella, three tiers and an attic, with scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary, including reliefs of the Pieta and the Epiphany, and paintings attributed to Juan de Villoldo.
• Neoclassical altarpiece: Located in the Epistle-side nave, dating from the 18th century, featuring a relief of the Virgin handing a rosary to Saint Dominic de Guzman.
• Calvary of the Christ of Saint Michael: A 13th-century Gothic sculpture, from the now-vanished church of Saint Michael. According to tradition, during processions the image would grow heavier as it passed the site of its original church.
• Baptismal font: In the Romanesque-Ogival style, dating from the 13th century, located in the baptistery beneath the choir.

Heritage Listing of the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption

The church was declared a Historic-Artistic Monument on 17 December 1981, in recognition of its historical and artistic value.

Surroundings and Other Points of Interest

Next to the temple stands the Gothic Jurisdictional Pillory, erected in the 15th century as a symbol of the jurisdictional autonomy of Boadilla del Camino. This monument, in the Ogival style, is decorated with Jacobean motifs and stands 7.60 metres tall.
