Profile
Church of Saint Lawrence of Sahagún
The Church of Saint Lawrence is a religious building located in the town of Sahagún, in Leon Province, on the Camino de Santiago Frances. It is built in the Mudejar Romanesque style and stands between Plaza de San Lorenzo and Calle del Arco. Unlike the traditional east-facing layout of churches, this church has its longitudinal axis oriented northwest to southeast.
In 2015, UNESCO approved the extension of the Camino de Santiago in Spain, recognising the “Routes of Santiago de Compostela: Camino Frances and Routes of Northern Spain”. Spain submitted a “Retrospective Inventory – Associated Elements” as documentation, which included the church of San Lorenzo under item number 1422.
The construction of this church dates from the first half of the 11th century, first mentioned in a document from 1110 referring to the building of a palace by Count Gonzalo Muniz on land near the church of San Lorenzo.
Considered one of the finest examples of hybrid Mudejar architecture, it combines Romanesque, Gothic and Islamic elements. Unlike the Church of San Tirso in Sahagún, San Lorenzo is built entirely of brick.
Inside, the church has a basilica-style plan with three naves separated by pointed arches. Semicircular apses precede straight bays, culminating in quarter-sphere vaults. The side naves are timber-roofed, while the central nave has 18th-century plaster groin vaults.
On the outside, the church’s east end stands out with its triple apse and the magnificent tower over the central bay. The central apse has three sections of different heights and decoration, while the east and west apses show ornamental details with horseshoe arches and friezes.
The church tower, representative of the brick Romanesque style, has four sections that decrease in height, each with characteristic decorative windows. There is also the Chapel of Jesus near the church, where the Holy Week processional floats are kept.
Due to its deterioration, the church was placed on the red list of endangered heritage by Hispania Nostra in 2011. However, in 2013 major restoration and consolidation works were carried out, including the renovation of various parts, including the roof.
