Profile
Saint Stephen Municipal Pilgrim Hostel, Castrojeriz
The Saint Stephen Municipal Pilgrim Hostel of Castrojeriz is a public establishment dedicated exclusively to serving pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago, provided they hold their corresponding credential. This hostel is housed in the old and beautiful church of San Esteban, a place with a rich history, situated very close to the route of the Camino de Santiago Frances. The hostel’s location is very convenient, right in the heart of the town, on the Plaza Mayor, where visitors can enjoy the lively atmosphere of Castrojeriz.
The church that houses the hostel was built in 1220, giving it great age and a very special character. However, the church was closed in 1864 due to its ruined state. Years later, Castrojeriz Town Council, together with the Junta de Castilla y León, decided to acquire this historic building. After the purchase, the church was renovated and restored, becoming both a cultural centre offering various activities to the community and, at the same time, a pilgrim hostel on the Camino de Santiago – a transformation completed in 2002, allowing this important institution to continue serving travellers walking this iconic route.
