What is there in Viscarret-Guerendiáin

Viscarret-Guerendiáin (officially Bizkarreta-Gerendiain) is a village in the municipality of Erro, in Navarra, on the Camino Frances.

Today it is a village of about a hundred people at the foot of the hills, but in the 12th century it mattered more than Roncesvalles: the pilgrims’ guide in the Codex Calixtinus gives it as the end of the first stage from the other side of the Pyrenees and the starting point towards Pamplona. It had its own hospital, which lost its purpose once the great complex at Roncesvalles took over the hospitality. From that period survives the church of San Pedro, with a 13th-century late-Romanesque doorway, although the building was heavily altered later. For today’s walker it is a breather between the Mezkiritz woods and the climb to Erro: a fountain, a bar or two and the feeling of treading one of the first stage ends in the history of the Camino.
