Santa Irene is a small hamlet in the municipality of O Pino, in A Coruna Province, on the Camino Frances.
With barely ten residents and about 23 kilometres from Santiago, Santa Irene has two small treasures right on the Camino, surrounded by a carballeira, an oak grove where a pilgrimage festival is held every 29 June. One is the late-17th-century chapel of Santa Irene, simple, rectangular and with a Baroque altarpiece; it is privately owned and rarely open for worship. The other is the Baroque fountain of the same name, which many pilgrims know as the fountain of eternal youth, because tradition holds that whoever washes in its water does not grow old. For centuries it had a granite image of the saint, from 1692, which was stolen at the end of the 1980s. From here just over two kilometres remain to A Rúa and O Pedrouzo.
From Santa Irene to A Rúa it is about 2.5 km.
To O Pedrouzo it is about 4.3 km.
And to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, in Santiago de Compostela, about 24.3 km remain.
