Puente de Piedra de Logroño or Puente de San Juan de Ortega
The Puente de Piedra de Logroño, also known as the Puente de San Juan de Ortega, is one of the most iconic monuments of Logroño, the capital of La Rioja. This iconic crossing over the Ebro River not only physically connects the two banks of the city, but also links centuries of history, tradition and modernity. Its importance lies not only in its architectural value, but also in its cultural and symbolic meaning.
History of the Puente de Piedra de Logroño
Origins and Early Historical Mentions of the Puente de Piedra
The first documented historical reference to the bridge appears in the Fuero de Logroño, granted by Alfonso VI in 1095. This document mentions a bridge in the area, though it does not specify details about its structure or construction. Oral tradition attributes its creation to Saint John of Ortega, although scholars, such as Fernando Albia de Castro in the 17th century, suggest the original bridge dates from an earlier period, possibly the 10th century.
In his initial description, Albia de Castro mentions a bridge with twelve arches and three towers that served defensive functions. These towers not only protected the city, but were also a symbol of local pride, depicted on the coat of arms of Logroño.
Transformations and Collapses of the Puente de Piedra
The original bridge underwent several modifications over the centuries due to floods, wars and natural wear. Among the most notable events was the great flood of 1775, which brought down one of the towers. During the first Carlist War, in 1835, an arch was cut to install a wooden drawbridge, and in 1850 the remaining towers were demolished due to deterioration.
In 1871, a severe flood seriously damaged the structure, forcing the demolition of three arches, which were replaced by two new ones. However, these measures proved insufficient, and the bridge became unusable after a partial collapse in 1880, which included a tragedy in which 90 soldiers died when a boat being used as a temporary crossing capsized.
Modern Reconstruction of the Puente de Piedra de Logroño (1882-1884)
The need for safe infrastructure led to the 1882 approval of a project designed by engineer Fermin Manso de Zuniga, who designed the bridge we know today. This work, built between 1882 and 1884, completely replaced the previous structure. The new bridge featured a higher roadbed, more widely spaced cylindrical piers and a design that eased the flow of water, increasing its resistance.
On June 11, 1884, coinciding with the festivities of Saint Barnabas, the seven-arch bridge that survives to this day was inaugurated. Since then, it has officially been known as the “Puente de Piedra” (Stone Bridge), distinguishing it from the Iron Bridge built later.
Architectural Features of the Puente de Piedra
Dimensions and Structural Design of the Puente de Piedra
The Puente de Piedra is 198 meters long and consists of seven arches with elliptical vaults of varying spans. The three central arches are the widest, with a span of 31.50 meters, while the side arches have an opening of 21.50 meters. This variation not only creates a balanced appearance, but also optimizes the structure’s hydraulic performance.
The cylindrical piers supporting the arches have cutwaters and spurs that reduce the impact of the flowing water. The central piers reach a diameter of 4.5 meters, while the side piers are slightly slimmer, at 3 meters in diameter.
Materials and Construction of the Puente de Piedra
The bridge was built with light gray sandstone, quarried both from the ruins of the previous bridge and from the Laserna quarries in Laguardia. This material not only ensures durability, but also blends with the natural and urban surroundings. The remains of the old bridge also served as a base for the formwork during reconstruction.
Manso de Zuniga’s design incorporated innovations for its time, such as greater spacing between the piers, allowing a more efficient flow of water under the bridge. This detail was crucial to preventing future collapses caused by floods.
Later Modifications and Improvements
In 1917, the bridge was widened with the addition of reinforced concrete pedestrian walkways on both sides. This work not only improved pedestrian safety, but also expanded space for vehicle traffic. In 2020, the bridge underwent a comprehensive restoration that included safety improvements, pedestrian access and a modern lighting system that can illuminate the arches in different colors for special events.
Cultural and Symbolic Significance of the Puente de Piedra
Gateway to the Camino de Santiago Frances
The Puente de Piedra is the gateway to the Camino de Santiago Frances in Logroño. Thousands of pilgrims cross this bridge every year on their route toward the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in the city of Santiago de Compostela, reinforcing its role as a symbol of connection and spirituality.
An Icon of the City
The bridge is a central element on the coat of arms of Logroño, reflecting its historical and cultural importance. Its presence in the city goes beyond its functionality; it is a meeting place, a leading tourist attraction and a reminder of the ingenuity and resilience of the generations who built and maintained it.
Lighting and Events
Since 2021, the bridge’s new lighting has revitalized its nighttime appearance, turning it into a visual spectacle during festivals and commemorations. This work combines modern technology with deep respect for the site’s history.
