Catedral de Santa Maria de Regla de Leon

The Catedral de Santa Maria de Regla de Leon, known as the Pulchra Leonina, is a masterpiece of Rayonnant Gothic architecture and one of the most emblematic churches in Spain. Located in the city of Leon, Leon Province, right on the Camino de Santiago Frances, this cathedral stands out for its light, airy architecture and its impressive array of medieval stained-glass windows, which make it a landmark of art and spirituality.

History of the Catedral de Leon

From Roman Baths to Gothic Cathedral

The current site of the cathedral was originally occupied by Roman baths built by the Legio VII Gemina. Later, in the 10th century, King Ordono II converted these structures into a royal palace, which he later granted for the construction of a cathedral in thanksgiving for his victory at the Battle of San Esteban de Gormaz. This first cathedral was consecrated in 1073 during the reign of Alfonso VI.

The Gothic Cathedral

Construction of the current Gothic cathedral began around 1205, but due to foundation problems, the work was halted and did not resume until 1255 under Bishop Martin Fernandez, with the support of King Alfonso X. The chief architect was Master Enrique, of French origin, who had previously worked on the Cathedral de Burgos. The cathedral drew on the floor plan of Reims Cathedral, though on a smaller scale, and is characterized by its light structure and abundant natural light.

Restorations and Conservation

Over the centuries, the cathedral has undergone various restorations due to structural issues and the deterioration of its materials. In the 19th century, a major restoration was carried out under Juan de Madrazo, who applied the theories of Viollet-le-Duc to restore the building’s original Gothic purity. In recent decades, work has been carried out to consolidate and clean the stonework, as well as to restore and protect the stained-glass windows using modern techniques.

Architecture of the Catedral de Leon

Floor Plan and Dimensions

The Catedral de Leon has a Latin-cross floor plan with three naves in the main body and five in the east end. It measures 90 meters in length, 30 meters in height and 29 meters in width. The naves are covered by four-part ribbed vaults, and the crossing is covered by a similar vault that replaced the Baroque dome during the 19th-century works.

Facades and Portals

The west facade has three portals: the central one dedicated to the Virgen Blanca, the left one to Saint John, and the right one to Saint Francis. Above them is a large rose window and two towers of differing styles. The south facade features the Puerta del Sarmental, while the north facade houses the Puerta de San Froilan, also known as the Puerta de la Reina.

Cloister and Chapels

The cloister, located on the north side, is Gothic in style and houses several chapels, notably the Capilla de Santiago, the Capilla del Nacimiento and the Capilla de la Virgen Blanca. Inside the cathedral are also the choir, the trascoro, the main altar and various funerary sculptures, including the tomb of King Ordono II.

The Stained-Glass Windows: a Display of Light and Color

The Catedral de Leon is especially renowned for its stunning collection of stained-glass windows, totaling 737 and covering an area of about 1,800 square meters. These windows, many of them original from the 13th century, depict biblical scenes as well as plant and geometric motifs, and are regarded as one of the finest collections of medieval stained glass in the world. The light passing through them creates a unique atmosphere inside the church, enhancing its spirituality and architectural beauty.
