What is there in Padornelo

Padornelo is a village in the municipality of Pedrafita do Cebreiro, in Lugo Province, on the Camino Frances.

It is a tiny hamlet of stone and slate, set on slabby ground, but with a history linked to protecting pilgrims: it belonged to the lordship of the Church of Santiago and the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, the Knights Hospitaller, settled here to look after and defend those crossing these mountains. From that priory survives the parish church of San Xoán, rebuilt at various times and heavily altered in 1964, with the cemetery beside it. For walkers, Padornelo is above all the warning of the day’s last hard ramp: straight after comes the short but steep climb to the Alto do Poio, at about 1,335 metres, the highest point of the Camino in Galicia, where a bar and a hostel wait to help you catch your breath.
