Ilárraz (Ilarratz in Basque) is a small village in the valley and municipality of Esteríbar, in Navarra, on the Camino Frances.
For anyone leaving Zubiri it is the first village of the third stage, just over half an hour’s walk down the river Arga. Only fifteen or twenty people live here and there are no shops or bars, so bring your water and breakfast from Zubiri. What it does have is the history of a village of minor nobility: for centuries it formed a single council with its neighbour Esquíroz, and its church of the Holy Cross, a late-Gothic stone building known in the valley as La Abadía, passed into private hands in 2008. It is a quiet stretch of stone houses and meadows, perfect for finding your rhythm before Larrasoaña.
