Geography and Context of Tosantos

Located 42 kilometers east of the city of Burgos, Tosantos sits at an elevation of 819 meters above sea level, covering an area of 5.74 km². Its landscape is characterized by gypsum formations and gentle hills, and it is crossed by the Camino Frances, making it a point of interest for pilgrims and visitors.

Rock-Cut Hermitage of the Virgen de la Peña

One of the most emblematic monuments in Tosantos is the Hermitage of the Virgen de la Peña, carved into the rock in the 16th century and extended in the 18th. Its interior holds an apse and a transept measuring approximately 16 meters long and 7 meters wide, with a vaulted ceiling about 5 meters high. Its altarpiece venerates a Romanesque image of the Virgin and Child, dating from the 12th century.

Cuevas de los Arancones

East of the village, on a gypsum outcrop, lie the Cuevas de los Arancones. These caves, many of which are inaccessible today, were used by hermits and are associated with the history of the hermitage and devotion to the Virgen de la Peña.
