What is there in Tosantos

Tosantos is a small municipality in the Montes de Oca district, in Burgos Province, on the Camino Frances.

The first thing you notice on arrival is not in the village but above it: set into the rock face that overlooks the houses is the hermitage of the Virgen de la Peña, half carved into the rock, one of the most original corners of this part of the Camino. Below, Tosantos is a village of about fifty people, with the church of San Esteban and a tradition of hospitality many remember: its parish hostel runs on donations with a shared dinner, in an old-style atmosphere. The name is usually linked to the feast of All Saints (Todos los Santos). From here the landscape begins to change: the villages draw near the Montes de Oca, and the next stop, Villambistia, is less than two kilometres away.

Distances from Tosantos

From Tosantos to Villambistia it is about 1.7 km.

To Espinosa del Camino it is about 3.2 km.

And to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, in Santiago de Compostela, about 537.9 km remain.

Where Tosantos is

About 42 kilometres east of Burgos, Tosantos lies at 819 metres above sea level, in a landscape of gentle hills and gypsum outcrops, with a small municipal area crossed from end to end by the Camino Frances.

The rock-cut hermitage of the Virgen de la Peña

It is the image of Tosantos: a hermitage set into the rock face above the village, carved out in the 16th century and enlarged in the 18th. Inside it has an apse and transept, about 16 metres long, 7 wide and 5 high, and its altarpiece holds a 12th-century Romanesque carving of the Virgin and Child.

The Arancones caves

East of the village, in a gypsum crag, open the Arancones caves, now largely inaccessible. Hermits lived in them, and they are linked to the origins of the devotion to the Virgen de la Peña.

Church of Saint Stephen the Protomartyr

The parish church is dedicated to Saint Stephen, the first martyr, and is the centre of the village’s religious life.

Tosantos and the Camino

For many, Tosantos means a warm welcome on the Camino Frances. Its parish hostel receives pilgrims from everywhere in a simple, reflective atmosphere, one of those that stay in the memory.

Festivities and traditions

In August there is a festival for residents and pilgrims, designed to bring together those who live here and those passing through, a good reflection of what the Camino means to the village.

In short

Tosantos brings together history, spirituality and landscape in a very small space. The hermitage of the Virgen de la Peña, the Arancones caves and its tradition of hospitality make it a special stop for pilgrims.
