What is there in Fuentes Nuevas

Fuentes Nuevas (Fuentesnuevas) is a village in the municipality of Ponferrada, in the El Bierzo district, in Leon Province, on the Camino Frances.

With about two thousand six hundred inhabitants, Fuentes Nuevas is almost another suburb of Ponferrada, some four and a half kilometres from the centre, but the Camino crosses its most traditional part. The first thing you see is the chapel of the Divino Cristo, also called the Vera Cruz, built in 1662 and restored respecting its original layout; then the church of Nuestra Señora, with an 18th-century altarpiece and a stork’s nest that has become its trademark. For centuries its people went to law with the monastery of Carracedo and the council of Ponferrada over control of these lands. It is a flat, easy stretch, without surprises, that soon links up with Camponaraya.

History

It is a village of medieval origin. For centuries the council of Ponferrada and the monastery of Carracedo went to law over the Fabero pasture, between Ponferrada and Carracedelo, which shows how valuable these lands were.

Population

With about 2,600 residents, it is today a residential district of the Ponferrada area.

Economy

Although the city has gained ground, vegetable plots, flowers, greenhouses and vineyards survive, along with some cattle.

The Cantalobos industrial estate

The Cantalobos industrial estate, one of the first in the district, provides work for much of the area.
