History of Camponaraya

Camponaraya arose from the union of two medieval villages: Campo and Naraya, first documented in writing in the 10th century. These villages were resettled on the initiative of the Asturian-Leonese monarchy and became part of the Kingdom of León. For centuries, they fell under the jurisdiction of the influential Monastery of Santa María de Carracedo, the spiritual and political hub of the region.

In the 15th century, the two villages merged to form Camponaraya, located at a key point on the Camino Frances, which led to the founding of two pilgrim hospitals: de la Soledad and de San Juan de Jabero.

Language and culture: between Galician and Leonese

Camponaraya is an example of linguistic coexistence. Its territory shows both forms of western Galician and Leonese features, making it a dialectal transition zone. This linguistic richness is reflected in place names, local expressions and the oral transmission of its history and customs.

Camponaraya has established itself as a leading agri-food production centre, with products recognised for their quality:
