Over the centuries, A Rúa was known as Dos Casas, perhaps in reference to its original layout around the main street. Among its heritage treasures is a stone manorial coat of arms embedded in one of the houses, a vestige of the former Pazo de Dos Casas manor house. Nearby, a distinctive fountain called Fonte de A Picha invites pilgrims to quench their thirst.

Natural beauty and an ideal setting for pilgrim rest

Our story extends beyond the town centre. The surroundings of A Rúa offer walks along peaceful green paths. A short distance away, the Portodemouros reservoir, formed by the Ulla River, offers opportunities for water activities or simple moments of contemplation.

Traditions, legends and Jacobean heritage in A Rúa

The collective memory of A Rúa preserves accounts of a former pilgrims’ hospital, reflecting its historical ties to the Camino de Santiago. There is also a local legend about a former church, destroyed in the 19th century following a tragic conflict, that once stood on this very site: a young soldier killed the priest who had authorised his conscription by substitution, which is said to have led to the church’s abandonment and ruin.

Communication and services for the modern pilgrim

A Rúa is home to the main tourist office of the O Pino Town Council, available to walkers for guidance and logistical support. Its excellent location alongside the N‑547, the road linking Santiago de Compostela and Lugo, also provides direct access from Melide to O Pedrouzo.

Public transport also connects smoothly: there is a regular metropolitan bus service, with stops in nearby villages and in Santiago, as well as inter-city lines between Santiago and Lugo.

A Rúa

The unique harmony between heritage, nature and myth makes A Rúa an unforgettable spot along the Camino Frances. With a high standard of information, this guide aims to highlight its historical, rural and emotional value for the modern pilgrim.
