Church of Holy Savior of Palat del Rey

Church of the Holy Savior of Palat del Rey in León

In the heart of the city of León, Leon Province, stands the Church of the Holy Savior of Palat del Rey, considered the oldest in the Leon capital. This temple, founded in the 10th century by King Ramiro II, is not only a notable example of Mozarabic architecture, but also a symbol of the history and spirituality of the Kingdom of Leon.

Founding and Historical Significance of the Church of the Holy Savior of Palat del Rey

Between 931 and 951, King Ramiro II ordered the construction of a monastery next to his royal palace, intended for his daughter Elvira Ramirez, who entered as a nun and abbess. This monastery, dedicated to the Holy Savior, housed women of royal blood and became the first royal pantheon of Leon, receiving the remains of monarchs such as Ramiro II, Ordono III, Sancho I and Ordono IV. The Chronicle of Sampiro documents this foundation in detail.

Devastation and Reconstruction

In the year 988, the raid by Almanzor caused significant devastation to the monastic complex. The church was later restored and turned into a parish church. However, in the early 20th century, it was left in a state of neglect that nearly led to its demolition. Thanks to the studies of architect Juan Crisostomo Torbado and historian Manuel Gomez-Moreno, its historical value was recognised and its destruction avoided.

Architecture of the Church of the Holy Savior of Palat del Rey

The original church had a Greek-cross floor plan, with two horseshoe-shaped apses facing each other and a transept covered by a ribbed dome in the Lombard tradition, built with tufa stone and rough-hewn ashlar. Over the centuries, the building underwent various modifications:

  • 13th century: Extension of the floor plan, turning the south-side chamber into an attached nave.

  • 15th century: Symmetrical construction on the north side.

  • 16th to 18th centuries: Major renovations, including the extension of the east end with a ribbed vault with tiercerons, the construction of side chapels and a sacristy, as well as the raising of the brick bellcote.

These changes reflect the architectural evolution and liturgical needs of each period.

Restoration and Enhancement

In 2006, the Heritage Foundation of Castile and Leon, in collaboration with the Diocese of Leon, carried out a comprehensive restoration of the building. Its original floor plan was reconstructed, remains of floors of Roman tradition were identified, and burials dated between the 12th and 19th centuries were found. In addition, the 16th-century Renaissance altarpiece was restored, the work of Guillen Doncel and Juan de Anges, notable artists of the school of Juan de Juni.

Church of the Holy Savior of Palat del Rey

The Church of the Holy Savior of Palat del Rey is a monument of immeasurable historical and architectural value. Its preservation and restoration allow visitors to appreciate the richness of Mozarabic art and the cultural evolution of the Kingdom of Leon. Today, this temple is not only a testament to the past, but also an active space for culture and spirituality in the city of Leon.
