La Portela on the Camino
La Portela, a hamlet of Vega de Valcarce, lies in the narrow Valcarce valley, between the motorway and the river. The Camino crosses it beside the old main road.
What to see in La Portela de Valcarce?
The village
It has fewer than a hundred residents, houses of stone and slate and the church of San Juan Bautista.
It lies in the valley that links Villafranca del Bierzo with Galicia. Many pilgrims stop here so as to make the climb to La Faba and O Cebreiro the next day.
The surroundings
All around are chestnuts, oaks and birches, and the Valcarce river runs beside the village.
Services
There is a hostel, a bar and rural accommodation.
Before the climb
Sleeping here shortens the stage to La Faba and O Cebreiro, one of the most demanding stretches of the Camino Frances. Pilgrims who do so face the mountain with more strength.
In short
La Portela de Valcarce is a small, practical hamlet in the valley, a good place to rest before the climb into Galicia.
