Villamoros on the Camino
A hamlet of Mansilla Mayor, Villamoros lies between Mansilla de las Mulas and Puente Villarente, a few kilometres from each. Pilgrims cross it beside the road, on the plain where the Esla and Porma rivers meet.
What to see in Villamoros de Mansilla?
Heritage
Church of San Esteban
The Iglesia de San Esteban, from the 16th and 17th centuries, has a square tower and an enclosed porch. Inside there are Baroque altarpieces and 16th-century paintings, among them a Santiago Matamoros.
The house with the coat of arms
Opposite the church stands the mansion of the Prado y Miranda family, from the late 18th century, with the family coat of arms on its facade.
Lancia
Very close by are the remains of Lancia, the Astur city that resisted Rome in the Cantabrian Wars and was later Romanised; the site can be visited.
Festivities
The festivities of the Immaculate Conception were moved from December to early September, and on 26 December Saint Stephen, the patron, is celebrated.
Traditions
After the festivities, the residents keep up the custom of a shared dinner with garlic soup and potatoes with meat.
The surroundings
The Esla and Porma plain is fertile irrigated land, green in summer, a contrast with the Meseta the pilgrim has just left behind.
Services
It is a small village with some rural accommodation; for more services, Mansilla and Puente Villarente are a step away.
In short
Villamoros de Mansilla is a village to pass through on the León plain, with a fine house bearing a coat of arms and ancient Lancia just round the corner.
