Arcahueja on the Camino
The Camino Frances passes through the upper part of the village, from where pilgrims can already see the river plain and the first housing estates of the capital. It then continues to Valdelafuente and enters León, about six kilometres away.
History
Arcahueja, a hamlet of Valdefresno, belonged to the Hermandad de La Sobarriba, which united the villages of the district against the power of the city. The confraternity of the Assumption was founded in 1840, and in 2010 the residents revived its traditional pendón, a banner more than seven metres tall, in red, green and white.
Architecture
The traditional houses are of adobe or brick, with one part for living in and another for tools and livestock; today they stand alongside new detached houses, a sign of how close León is.
