Arcahueja on the Camino de Santiago

Arcahueja is a stop on the Camino Frances. The route crosses the upper part of the village, offering pilgrims a panoramic view of the rural León countryside. From Arcahueja, pilgrims continue on to Valdelafuente and then to the city of León.

History of Arcahueja

Arcahueja was once part of the historic Hermandad de La Sobarriba (Brotherhood of La Sobarriba), an organisation that historically protected small rural settlements from urban councils. The village is home to the Cofradía de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción (Brotherhood of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción), founded in 1840. In 2010, thanks to the village’s Cultural Association, its traditional pendón (ceremonial banner) was restored, consisting of a 7.2-metre-high pole and a cloth in red, green and white.

Architecture and Surroundings of Arcahueja

The traditional houses of Arcahueja are built mainly of adobe or brick, usually with two two-storey sections: the first used as living quarters and the second for storing farming tools and livestock. This architecture reflects the influence of urban culture due to the village’s proximity to the León capital.

Social Initiatives

The village has taken part in reception programmes for immigrants and refugees. Organisations such as Diaconía have provided comprehensive support to these people, including housing, and medical and psychological services, helping to repopulate and revitalise the rural area.
