What is there in Liñares
Liñares is a parish and village in the municipality of Pedrafita do Cebreiro, in Lugo Province, on the Camino Frances.
Only three kilometres from O Cebreiro and at over 1,200 metres, Liñares is the first Galician village after the summit, with about twenty residents. Its name gives away its old role: the Crown gave it to the monastery of O Cebreiro and, it is said, it grew flax (liño) for the monks’ needs. It already appears in the Codex Calixtinus guide as “Linar de Rege”. Beside the Camino stands the church of San Esteban, medieval in origin and restored in 1963, with a square tower reminiscent of that of Santa María in O Cebreiro. It is a good place for an early coffee, because the Camino soon climbs to the Alto de San Roque, with its statue of the pilgrim battling the wind.
What to see in Liñares?
Liñares
Liñares, in the municipality of Pedrafita do Cebreiro, is a small hamlet of stone and slate houses, about 3 km from O Cebreiro. Its name comes from the fields of flax (liño) grown here, which supplied the monastery.
It has a small church of San Esteban, of Romanesque origin, beside the Camino.
On the Camino
Leaving O Cebreiro, the Camino descends to Liñares along a track between pines and meadows, with views over the valleys of Os Ancares and O Courel.
For pilgrims it is a quiet stop; shortly afterwards you climb to the Alto de San Roque, with its great bronze statue of a pilgrim battling the wind.
In short
Liñares is one of the first Galician hamlets on the Camino towards the Cathedral of Santiago in Santiago de Compostela: stone, mist and mountains.
