Mercadoiro is a hamlet in the parish of Santiago de Laxe, in the municipality of Paradela, in Lugo Province, on the Camino Frances.
With barely a handful of residents, Mercadoiro is one of those places that exist on the pilgrim’s map almost exclusively because of the Camino: about 17 kilometres from Sarria, around kilometre 95, a hostel with a restaurant in a restored stone house has been open since 2007 and has become a usual stop for those starting in Sarria who want a shorter first day, or simply a meal before Portomarín. Its name seems to refer to an old market place. We are now on the edge of the Ribeira Sacra, and the descent towards the Miño starts to show its terraced vineyards. There are no monuments in the hamlet, although the church of Santiago de Laxe, head of the parish, is very close.
From Mercadoiro to Vilachá it is about 2.5 km.
To Portomarín it is about 4.9 km.
And to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, in Santiago de Compostela, about 97.5 km remain.
