The town of Mansilla de las Mulas in León will finally be able to bring back its municipal pilgrim hostel, closed for six years, thanks to an ambitious renovation project already under way. This landmark building, located right on the Camino de Santiago Frances, will be fully renovated with an investment of 569,008 euros, with the aim of modernising its facilities and giving new life to this space, so widely used by the pilgrims who walk the well-known Jacobean route.
The contract to carry out the renovation work was awarded in September 2021, and the works are scheduled to take a maximum of 12 months to complete. The building, located between Calle Puente and Calle Mesones, will undergo a major transformation that will keep its original structure as intact as possible, made up of two distinct sections arranged around a central courtyard. The project also includes an expansion of the total built area, from the current 596 square metres to 628 square metres once the renovation is complete.
The renovated design of the hostel will not only preserve its original spirit, but will also bring in important improvements to increase the space’s comfort and functionality. Among the new features to be included are new bathrooms, a more modern reception area, a communal lounge, an entrance hall, a laundry area, bicycle access, larger dormitories and a renovated gallery. This last feature, located on the upper floor overlooking the central courtyard, will be specially fitted out so that pilgrims can enjoy a quiet space for reading or resting, bringing back one of the building’s most valued features, which had been lost in earlier renovations.
While the renovation is being completed, the Town Council took steps to make up for the hostel’s absence. In 2024, a temporary alternative space was set up on Avenida Picos de Europa, a stopgap solution that has helped meet the demand from the many pilgrims who visit this town throughout the year. However, the opening of the renovated hostel offers an opportunity to provide a much broader, higher-quality service, as well as to give Mansilla de las Mulas back one of its most significant buildings.
This project not only highlights the town’s architectural heritage, but also reaffirms Mansilla de las Mulas’s importance as a strategic point on the Camino de Santiago route. The renovation will also require authorisation from the Territorial Commission for Cultural Heritage of León, given the building’s location in an area of special historical and cultural interest.
