Uterga is a small municipality in the Puente la Reina area, in Navarra, on the Camino Frances.
It is the village that gathers pilgrims at the foot of the Alto del Perdón, after the stony descent that is so hard on the knees, so it usually feels like a small reward: stone houses with flowered balconies, shade and a hostel with a terrace where many take their boots off for a while before carrying on. It has fewer than two hundred residents and a curious history: until the early 17th century it shared a council with the neighbouring hamlet of Olandain, whose inhabitants eventually moved here. Juan Beriain, a parish priest and writer of the early 17th century who wrote in both Spanish and Basque, came from Uterga. From here the Camino eases off among cereal fields and vineyards, reaching Muruzábal in less than three kilometres.
From Uterga to Muruzábal it is about 2.8 km.
To Obanos it is about 4.6 km.
And to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, in Santiago de Compostela, about 696 km remain.
