Muruzábal is a town and municipality in the Valdizarbe valley, in Navarra, on the Camino Frances.
This village of fewer than three hundred people is above all the crossroads that decides your morning: here the detour leaves for Santa María de Eunate, the enigmatic 12th-century octagonal Romanesque church about two kilometres away, within its own municipality. Many pilgrims take the detour and rejoin the Camino at Obanos, and few regret it. Those who carry straight on walk through a village with more presence than it seems: the Gothic church of San Esteban, enlarged in the Renaissance, and a 17th-century Baroque palace now turned into a winery, where a tasting may put the rest of the stage at risk. Muruzábal bought its town charter from the crown in 1665 to stop depending on the valley.
