Full Restoration of the Church of Saint Martin the Bishop in Palacios de Benaver: Project, Budget and the Future of the Church
The Iglesia de San Martín Obispo de Palacios de Benaver, a jewel of Burgos’s historic heritage, has remained closed since part of one of its vaults partially collapsed in December. The incident forced religious services to be moved to the town’s monastery, pending a consolidation and restoration project to guarantee the safety and preservation of the building.
The repair project has already been finalised and involves an investment of approximately €60,000, with an action plan covering the damaged vaults and the structural pillar that supports them.
Context of the Church Closure and Current Status
After part of the vault collapsed in the first bay of the nave, technicians from the Diocese of Burgos inspected the damage and confirmed the need for urgent intervention.
- The church remains closed, and the fallen stones have not yet been removed.
- Mass is currently being held provisionally at the town’s monastery.
- Reopening will depend on completion of the works, estimated to take between 4 and 6 months.
Intervention Project: Objectives and Phases
Diocesan technical architect Miguel Ángel Ortega has designed a comprehensive single-phase action plan, in order to avoid duplicating scaffolding work and to reduce costs.
Main works:
- Collapsed vault of the first bay
- Removal of unsuitable mortar applied during a previous intervention.
- Replacement with structural stitching using steel rods and protective mesh.
- Reconstruction using consolidation techniques to ensure lasting stability.
- Vault of the second bay of the nave
- Reinforcement of the missing shell to join all the vault webs together.
- Installation of a metal stitching system to integrate the structure into a single unit.
- Prevention of future movement and displacement.
- Central supporting pillar
- Inspection from the base to the springing point of the arch.
- Full consolidation to stabilise the connection with the vaults.
Additional works:
- Minor roof tile replacements.
- Preventive maintenance work to avoid water infiltration.
Funding and Expected Timeline
The budget amounts to €60,000. Execution depends on the next call for the “Convenio de las Goteras” (Roof Leaks Agreement) grant, expected in March 2021, which would allow work to begin in spring.
Additionally, the following is being considered:
- Requesting emergency-need grants from the Provincial Council.
- Arranging financial support through the local action group Adeco Camino.
- Mobilising community collaboration through voluntary contributions.
Impact on the Community and Cultural Heritage
The restoration of the Church of Saint Martin the Bishop not only ensures the building’s structural stability, but also guarantees:
- The preservation of a landmark historical and cultural asset in Palacios de Benaver.
- The return of liturgical celebrations to their original setting.
- A boost to heritage tourism in the region.
- The preservation of a collective identity linked to the church for centuries.
