What is there in Reliegos

Reliegos is a village in the municipality of Santas Martas, in Leon Province, on the Camino Frances.

After the long straight from El Burgo Ranero, few villages are as welcome as Reliegos: it appears in a gentle hollow with its cellars dug into the ground and a main street that is the Camino itself. It has about two hundred residents and a much older history than it looks, because tradition places the Roman town of Palantia nearby, where three military roads met. But the story everyone tells is another: on 28 December 1947 a meteorite fell right in the main street, a couple of metres from an inhabited house, and its main fragment is kept in the National Museum of Natural Sciences in Madrid. From here about six kilometres remain to Mansilla de las Mulas, where the two variants that split at Calzada del Coto meet again.

Distances from Reliegos

From Reliegos to Mansilla de las Mulas it is about 6 km.

To Villamoros de Mansilla it is about 10.5 km.

And to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, in Santiago de Compostela, about 336.5 km remain.

Reliegos on the Camino

A hamlet of Santas Martas, Reliegos is the last village before Mansilla de las Mulas on the Camino Frances. Pilgrims know it for its bar decorated with walkers’ messages and for its hostel, on a quiet street of wine cellars.

History

Reliegos is identified with ancient Palantia, a Roman staging post where three roads met, among them the Via Traiana. In the Middle Ages it appears in royal and church documents, and in the 15th century it passed to the lordship of Mansilla, held by the Enríquez family.

The Reliegos meteorite

On 28 December 1947 a meteorite weighing several kilos fell near the village, one of the few in Spain that were seen to fall and then recovered.

Landscape

Reliegos lies between Tierra de Campos and the Esla plain, on flat land at just over 800 metres. It is crossed by the Valdearcos stream, which flows into the Esla, and surrounded by irrigated land where vegetables are grown.

Festivities

Highlights through the year:

  • Holy Week.
  • San Isidro Labrador, with the blessing of the fields.
  • Cultural Week, at the beginning of August.
  • Patron saint festivities of San Cornelio and San Cipriano.

In short

Reliegos is a small village with good stories: a crossroads of Roman roads, a meteorite and a bar that is already part of Camino legend.
