Valdelafuente is a village belonging to the municipality of Valdefresno, in the Provincia de León, within the comarca of La Sobarriba, in the autonomous community of Castilla y León. Located just a few kilometres from the city of León, this village stands out for its traditional architecture and its connection to the Camino de Santiago.

Valdelafuente on the Camino de Santiago

Valdelafuente is crossed by the Camino de Santiago, specifically the Camino Frances. From the village, pilgrims climb up to the Alto del Portillo, from where one of the first panoramic views of the city of León can be seen. In the past, a stone cross once stood at this spot; it was later moved to the Plaza de San Marcos in León, where the figure of a weary pilgrim was added.

Location and Surroundings of Valdelafuente

Valdelafuente is located at an altitude of 865 metres above sea level. It borders Corbillos de la Sobarriba to the north, Villaseca de la Sobarriba and Valdefresno to the northeast, Arcahueja to the southeast, Valdesogo de Arriba to the south, Castrillo de la Ribera and Santa Olaja de la Ribera to the southwest, and the city of León to the northwest.

History and Heritage of Valdelafuente

The history of Valdelafuente dates back at least to the year 1119, when it is mentioned in the Cartulario de Eslonza. The village was part of the old Hermandad de La Sobarriba, an organisation that brought together various settlements in the comarca for shared defence and administration.

Among its heritage, the parish church dedicated to San Juan Bautista and San Mamés stands out, with festivities celebrated on 24 June and 17 August respectively.

Demographics of Valdelafuente

The population of Valdelafuente has grown slightly in recent decades, rising from 157 inhabitants in 2000 to 274 in 2017, according to INE data. This increase is due in part to its proximity to León and the development of small residential areas.
