What is there in Trobajo del Camino

Trobajo del Camino is a village in the municipality of San Andrés del Rabanedo, in Leon Province, on the Camino Frances.

With more than twenty thousand inhabitants, it is the most populous settlement in its municipality and, in practice, another district of the León urban area: pilgrims enter it almost without noticing, after crossing the Bernesga on the San Marcos bridge and the railway tracks. It appears in medieval documents as Trepalio or Trebalio, and it once had hospitals for walkers. From that Camino past survive the hermitage of Santiago, rebuilt in 1777 on a medieval one, right on the line of the Camino, and the late-18th-century church of Saint John the Baptist. It also keeps traditional half-buried wine cellars. It is a long urban stretch, so take it patiently as far as La Virgen del Camino.

Trobajo on the Camino

The Camino Frances leaves León over the San Marcos bridge and climbs straight away to Trobajo, the first district pilgrims come to. It is an urban stretch, among warehouses and avenues, but the hermitage of Santiago is a reminder that the village was born beside the route.

Where it is

Just 3 km from the centre of León, between the Santiago and Fontanillas streams, which flow into the Bernesga, Trobajo now forms one continuous urban area with the capital.

History

The area has been inhabited since prehistoric times. The village appears in medieval documents as Trebalio or Trepalio and grew with the Camino, with hermitages and a small hospital for pilgrims.

Heritage

  • Church of Saint John the Baptist: of stone and brick, built between 1794 and 1801.
  • Hermitage of Saint James the Apostle: rebuilt in 1777 on a medieval one, with an image of Saint James as a pilgrim on the facade; it is the district’s great Camino landmark.
  • El Quijote park: a green space with sculptures dedicated to Cervantes’s hero.

Festivities

  • Santiago Apóstol (25 July): the big festival, with a week of processions, open-air dances and cultural events.
  • Saint John the Baptist (24 June): the feast of the parish’s titular saint.
  • The Annunciation (25 March): the feast of the patroness.

Culture

Medieval markets and Camino-related activities round off the district’s calendar.

Population

With more than 20,000 inhabitants, Trobajo is the most populous settlement in the municipality of San Andrés del Rabanedo and includes districts such as Paraíso-Cantinas and La Sal.

In short

Trobajo del Camino is the urban way out of León: not very monumental, but with a hermitage of Saint James that sets the course westwards.
