History of San Justo de la Vega

San Justo de la Vega has its roots in the Visigothic period, between the 6th and 8th centuries. Its development was driven by its proximity to Astorga and its location on one of the Roman roads leading out of Asturica Augusta. During the Middle Ages, the Camino Frances contributed significantly to the municipality’s growth, being one of the final stages before reaching Astorga.

Cultural and Architectural Heritage of San Justo de la Vega

Church of Santos Justo y Pastor

This church, dedicated to the saints Justo and Pastor, retains a bell-gable tower from the original building. Inside it houses an image of the patron saint, an 18th-century altar and a modern altarpiece by the local artist Sendo.

Puente de la Molinería

Also known as the Roman bridge of the Moldería Real, this historic bridge spans the Tuerto river and stands as evidence of Roman engineering in the region.

4th-Century Sarcophagus

In the Middle Ages, a sarcophagus dating from the 4th century was discovered in San Justo de la Vega; it was later moved to Astorga Cathedral and subsequently to the National Archaeological Museum.

Culture and Traditions of San Justo de la Vega

Holy Week

The Brotherhood of the Holy Cross and Our Father Jesus the Nazarene, founded in 1838, organises processions during Holy Week, most notably the “carrera de San Juan” run on Good Friday.

Patron Saint Festivities

These are held in honour of the saints Justo and Pastor on the first Sunday of August, preceded by a Cultural Week.

National Painting Competition

Every September an open-air painting competition is held, attracting artists from various regions.
