History and pilgrim heritage

Fonfría was formerly known as “Fonfría do Camiño”, and from the 16th century onwards it housed a hospital for pilgrims. Between 1535 and the 19th century, the Hospital de Santa Catalina, dependent on the Sancti Spiritus convent in Melide, offered fire, salt, water, a bed and two blankets to those beginning the Galician stage. Today the name is preserved in the parish church’s inscription.

Architecture and charm of the Church of San Xoán

Built in the 16th century and restored in 1964, the Church of San Xoán de Fonfría retains its original character. With a rectangular nave in limestone and quartz, it has a gabled slate roof, an attached sacristy and a simple trilobed bell-gable. It preserves its round-arched doorways with repositioned original voussoirs. Inside is kept a chalice with an inscription referring to the old hospital.

Landscape and natural surroundings

Set among oak groves and meadows, Fonfría offers a comforting pause after the climb to the Alto do Poio. From here the gentle descent begins towards Triacastela, offering views that blend the epic with the calm shaped by centuries of pilgrim tradition.
