The Puente Mayor of Carrión de los Condes, Palencia Province, is an iconic structure that has witnessed the passage of pilgrims and merchants over the centuries. Spanning the Carrión River, this bridge has played a crucial role in the history and development of the region.

History and Origins of the Puente Mayor

The original construction of the Puente Mayor is attributed to Countess Dona Teresa, founder of the Monastery of Saint Zoilus, in the 11th century. During this period, the proliferation of bridges along the Camino de Santiago Frances eased the passage of pilgrims and merchants. The original bridge had at least seven arches and was fitted with fortified gates at both ends, where tolls were collected from merchants and pilgrims.

Reconstruction in the 16th Century

In the second half of the 16th century, the original bridge was torn down due to deterioration. Between 1561 and 1563, royal orders were issued for its repair, carried out by Juan Ravin. Master stonemason Juan de Aral later undertook a major reconstruction, replacing five of the original arches with four wider ones to allow the free passage of weeds and sediment. After Aral’s death, Gonzalo de Sobremazas and Juan de Escalante continued the work until 1576. Finally, Juan de Ortega Castaneda and Juan de Castillo completed the reconstruction following the original plan.

Structure and Current Features of the Puente Mayor de Carrión de los Condes

Today’s Puente Mayor has a roadway twenty feet wide, made of large stones and slabs, designed for the safe passage of carts, mounts and pedestrians. The carved stone parapets reach five feet in height, providing safety for passersby. In the 17th century, Baroque stone gates were added at the start and end of the bridge, which were torn down in the mid-20th century to allow motor vehicle traffic.

Importance on the Camino de Santiago Frances

Over the years, the Puente Mayor has been an essential crossing point for thousands of pilgrims walking the Camino Frances toward the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, in the city of Santiago de Compostela. Its strategic location on the stage between Carrión de los Condes and Terradillos de los Templarios makes it a significant landmark on the Jacobean route.

Conservation and Accessibility

Today, the Puente Mayor is well preserved and accessible to both pedestrians and vehicles, allowing two-way traffic. Its sturdy structure and historic design make it a tourist attraction and a living testament to medieval engineering in Spain.
