What is there in Terradillos de los Templarios

Terradillos de los Templarios is a village in the municipality of Lagartos, in Palencia Province, on the Camino Frances.

The suffix is not decorative: these lands belonged to the Order of the Temple, hence the name the village officially adopted in 1916. No visible remains of that presence survive, but there is a legend told to every pilgrim: before the order was dissolved, the knights supposedly hid a golden hen somewhere around here that nobody has ever found. The village, of fifty-odd residents and built of brick and adobe, clusters around the church of San Pedro. It was a municipality in its own right until the 1930s. Today it is a quiet and popular stage end on the long crossing of Palencia, with hostels where the afternoon passes unhurried before entering the lands of León.

History

As its name suggests, tradition links Terradillos with the Order of the Temple, which is said to have had a commandery here to protect and look after pilgrims, although few documents prove it. What is clear is that the pilgrim route has always shaped the life of the village.

In the 19th century it was a municipality in its own right, and in 1916 it officially adopted the suffix «de los Templarios», of the Templars. Today it is a hamlet of the municipality of Lagartos.

Heritage

Church of San Pedro

The Church of San Pedro has a single nave and is built of brick, like almost everything in Tierra de Campos. It was rebuilt in the 19th century and keeps its old tower; inside there is a 14th-century Gothic Christ and two altarpieces, one from the 17th century and one Baroque.

The hen that laid the golden eggs

Legend has it that the priest of the vanished parish of San Esteban took a golden egg to Santiago de Compostela every year. When Compostela asked him for the hen, he and the Templars buried it on the Torbosillo hill, beside the Camino, where it is still said to be hidden.

Terradillos on the Camino

On the Camino Frances, Terradillos is a stop chosen by many pilgrims who want to avoid Sahagún: its hostels, named after the Templars, are known for their quiet atmosphere.

The village

It stands on a small rise, almost on the border between Palencia Province and Leon Province, and has about 60 residents.

How to get there

The Camino de Santiago motorway (A-231) and the N-120 link it with León and Burgos. The nearest railway station is in Sahagún, about 12 km away.

In short

Terradillos de los Templarios is a small village with plenty of legend: a Templar name, a buried golden hen and a warm welcome for the pilgrim at the gates of León.
