Chapel of Saint Roch Melide

Capela de San Roque de Melide

The Capilla de San Roque, located on Rua do Progreso s/n in Melide, A Coruna Province (42°54’49” N, 8°00’46” W), stands right on the Camino de Santiago Frances, in one of the most urban, busy areas along the pilgrim route.

History of the Capilla de San Roque Melide

Built in 1949, this chapel incorporates elements from two previous medieval churches — San Pedro and the old San Roque — whose ruins provided valuable materials such as the Romanesque portal and decorative arches.

Romanesque Portal: A Relocated Masterpiece

The main portal, an anticipation of medieval Galician art, features four semicircular archivolts with motifs such as small arches, rosettes and zigzags, supported by capitals carved with highly expressive plant figures.

Interior and Archaeological Finds

The interior conceals medieval remains recovered during recent work (2005), including arches and fragments of 13th-century murals, from the original San Pedro church.

Adjacent Cruceiro: A Medieval Emblem

Next to the chapel stands one of Galicia’s oldest cruceiros (wayside crosses, 14th century), possibly moved from another location. One side depicts Christ in Majesty and the other a Deesis (Christ between the Virgin and Saint John), perhaps from a medieval stone altar.

Importance of the Capilla de San Roque on the Camino Frances

With a central location as it passes through Melide, the chapel is a required stop for contemplation and rest. Its monumental portal, its iconic cruceiro and its direct connection to medieval history make this spot a unique cultural experience before continuing toward Arzua, O Pedrouzo and Santiago de Compostela.

Recommendations for Pilgrims

  1. Spend a few minutes calmly admiring the Romanesque portal before continuing the route.
  2. Visit the cruceiro, identifying its dual medieval iconography.
  3. Take advantage of nearby cafes and terraces for a refreshing break.
  4. Ask around about possible guided tours or credential stamping.

Capilla de San Roque de Melide

The Capilla de San Roque is an exceptional case of medieval architectural rescue in the immediate postwar period, integrating historic pieces into a modern structure and offering a richer heritage perspective on the Camino de Santiago in Melide.

A visit to this spot strengthens the connection between medieval architecture and Jacobean tradition, giving pilgrims a deep look at Romanesque art rescued right along the way toward the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela.
