Located on Calle Adolfo Suarez, next to the Plaza Mayor of Carrión de los Condes, this church was once part of a now-vanished monastic complex and stands right on the Camino de Santiago Frances, giving it special significance along the Jacobean route.

Architecture and Structure

Floor Plan and Nave

The temple has an irregular rectangular floor plan with a single nave divided into four bays. The present-day roof was replaced with a modern one during the 20th-century restoration. The church is crowned by three semicircular apses with a presbytery of a wide straight bay, covered by a barrel vault in the straight bay and an oven vault in the apses.

Exterior

On the outside, the large buttresses on the apse and nave stand out, partly absorbed by the side chapels added in the 16th century, now used as a parish museum. The main apse is partly hidden behind private houses.

The West Doorway: A Romanesque Masterpiece

The west doorway, dated between 1160 and 1170, is one of the finest examples of Spanish Romanesque art. It consists of a round arch with an archivolt resting on columns, topped by a frieze with high reliefs summarising the apocalyptic revelation of John the Evangelist on Patmos.

Upper Frieze

The upper frieze shows a Pantocrator in a mandorla, surrounded by the Tetramorph and the College of Apostles beneath trefoil arches. Behind them, architectural depictions symbolise the Heavenly Jerusalem.

Archivolt

The archivolt displays a rich iconography of medieval trades, including coin minters, musicians, a scribe, a shoemaker and a contortionist dancer. This detailed depiction of medieval society is unique in Romanesque art.

Capitals

The capitals show scenes of the struggle between good and evil, including depictions of trials by ordeal and divine judgments. These scenes reinforce the moral and eschatological message of the doorway.

Museum of Sacred Art

Inside, the church houses a museum of sacred art bringing together works of great interest, such as the 16th-century altarpiece of Saint John of Cestillos, a 15th-century Pieta, several crucifixes, antiphonaries and other liturgical objects.

Restorations and Preservation of the Church of Saint James the Greater

Over the centuries, the church has undergone various modifications and restorations:

• 16th century: Rebuilt with a single central nave and the addition of side chapels and a sacristy.
• 18th century: Rebuilding of the present-day tower.
• 19th century: A fire in 1811 that destroyed much of the temple, sparing only the side apses and the west doorway; rebuilt in 1849 at a smaller size.
• 20th century: General preservation work and restorations, including the roof and the steel canopy protecting the doorway frieze.
