The Church of Saint Marina of Sarria, located in the heart of the Lugo town of Sarria, is a notable Neo-Gothic temple with a rich history and a strong connection to the Jacobean tradition. Built in 1885 on the remains of a 12th-century Romanesque church, this church is a landmark both for pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago Frances and for lovers of architectural heritage.

A Temple with History: From Romanesque to Neo-Gothic

The present-day church replaced an old Romanesque temple which, due to its ruined state, was demolished in the 19th century. Only a few documentary features of the original structure survive, such as a drawing of the doorway and a capital. The present church, in the Neo-Gothic style, stands with a renewed aesthetic adapted to the architectural trends of the period, while still holding its importance as a place of worship and historical landmark in the town of Sarria.

The temple has a Latin-cross floor plan, typical of many medieval and modern churches, and is crowned by a pyramidal spire that rises above the town, becoming a distinctive symbol visible from different points across the municipality.

Facing the church once stood the old Sarria casino, a building with a pronounced Modernist influence, some features of which survive on the facade. This architectural ensemble lends special charm to Calle Mayor, one of the historic arteries of Sarria’s old town.

Saint Marina of Sarria, whose feast day is celebrated on 11 August, is the town’s patroness and the object of great popular devotion.
Saint John the Baptist, whose feast day is 24 June, is another of Sarria’s patron saints, and his image holds a prominent place at the altar.

Inside, several polychrome stained-glass windows can also be seen, filling the space with light and colour, along with a crucified Christ that is another of the most venerated features in the temple.

Importance on the Camino de Santiago

Sarria is one of the most important points on the Camino de Santiago Frances, as it is the last town from which the minimum 100 kilometres required to obtain the Compostela in Santiago de Compostela can be walked. For this reason, the Church of Saint Marina of Sarria has become a landmark for pilgrims beginning their journey in this town.

The church offers a space of quiet reflection and prayer for walkers who, before setting out on their journey to Compostela, seek a moment of spirituality and connection with the history of the place.
