O Hospital (Hospital da Cruz) is a small hamlet in the Ligonde hills, on the boundary between the municipalities of Portomarín and Monterroso, in Lugo Province, on the Camino Frances.
Its name is a direct reminder of the past: here stood one of the many medieval hospitals that lined the route to shelter pilgrims on the most exposed stretches, and the hamlet, high in the hills, was one of them. Today no visible remains of that building survive, but the function continues: since 1993 there has been a public Xunta hostel, with about thirty beds, much appreciated by those who prefer to break the stage between Portomarín and Palas de Rei. It is a cluster of a few houses beside the junction with the N-540 road, which the Camino crosses to continue along a quiet tarmac track towards Vendas de Narón and the Alto de Ligonde.
