Vendas de Narón (Ventas de Narón) is a small hamlet in the Ligonde hills, in the municipality of Portomarín, in Lugo Province, on the Camino Frances.
The name “vendas” (inns) already hints at its historical role: it was a place of trade and of help for pilgrims, with its own hospital, where you caught your breath before climbing the Alto de Ligonde. According to Elias Valiña, the O Cebreiro parish priest who studied the route so closely, a fierce battle between Christian and Muslim troops was fought nearby around the year 820. On the way out of the hamlet stands the chapel of A Madalena, probably heir to that hospital, with a curious wooden door carved with the chalice, the cross and the pilgrim’s scallop shell. Today there are a couple of bar-hostels to stop at. From here the Camino climbs along a track to the Alto de Ligonde, one of the high points of the stage.
From Vendas de Narón to Ligonde it is about 3 km.
To Airexe it is about 3.7 km.
And to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, in Santiago de Compostela, about 79.6 km remain.
