What to see in Ayegui?
Heritage of Ayegui
- Irache Monastery: at the foot of Montejurra, it brings together buildings from many periods, with origins that tradition takes back to the 8th century and documents from 958. Its prestige grew when García Sánchez III founded a hospital for pilgrims here in the 11th century. The Romanesque church dates from the 12th century; in the 16th, by then part of the Benedictine congregation of Valladolid, the Plateresque cloister and the portal were added, and in the 17th another cloister and the Herrerian tower. It was a pilgrim hospital, a university between 1569 and 1824 and, later, a parador.
- Church of Saint Martin: an 18th-century church, with remains from the 17th, with a rectangular single nave, a lunette vault and two Neoclassical side chapels. Inside it keeps a 16th-century Romanist altarpiece and several carvings, among them a Gothic Christ from around 1400.
- Hermitage of Saint Cyprian: a small hermitage in the municipality, which also gives its name to the village’s tourist hostel.
- Wine Fountain (Fuente del Vino): next to Bodegas Irache, right on the Camino Frances, a stone fountain with two taps, one for water and one for wine, so that pilgrims can get their strength back. Its inscriptions invite you to raise a toast, but also to drink in moderation.
