What is there in Revenga de Campos

Revenga de Campos is a town and municipality in the Tierra de Campos district, in Palencia Province, on the Camino Frances.

The Camino crosses this village of about a hundred and thirty people along its main street, after the straight from Población de Campos beside the road. In the late 19th century it had around eight hundred inhabitants, and in October 1517 it hosted an illustrious guest: the young Charles V, newly arrived in Spain, stayed in a country house surrounded by water and reached by a drawbridge. For pilgrims, the stop that makes sense is the church of San Lorenzo, 13th-century with 16th-century alterations, which keeps a 15th-century image very fitting for those passing through: the Virgin of the Pilgrim. From here only a couple of kilometres remain to Villarmentero de Campos.

Revenga lies at 763 metres above sea level and has a municipal area of just over 22 km². The P-980, linking Frómista and Carrión de los Condes, runs through the village, and the Camino runs parallel to it on a dirt path.

History

10th-century documents already mention it as Revendica. In the early 20th century it had as many as 840 inhabitants; today it has around 140, the same story of depopulation lived by so many villages of Tierra de Campos.

Heritage

Church of Saint Lawrence

The main monument is the church of Saint Lawrence, of medieval origin and much altered from the 16th century. It has a single wide nave with a barrel vault and a three-stage tower of stone and brick. Inside there are 17th- and 18th-century altarpieces and an image of the Virgen del Peregrino, Our Lady of the Pilgrim.

Houses with coats of arms

The village keeps 16th-century houses bearing coats of arms. In a country house surrounded by water, with a drawbridge, the young Charles I slept on 30 October 1517, on his first journey through Castile.

Notable residents

Two names linked to Revenga:

  • Bartolomé Amor de Pisa (1785), cavalry general in the Peninsular War and the Carlist Wars. He is buried in the church and has a monolith in the square.
  • Ambrosio Garrachón Bengoa (1892), journalist at the Diario Palentino and poet, author of the «Himno a Palencia».

Revenga on the Camino

The Camino Frances passes through Revenga on its way to the Cathedral of Santiago in Santiago de Compostela. The village lies between Población de Campos and Villarmentero, on a flat, straight stretch; on the way out, a small rest area offers shade.

The Beacons of the Camino

The church of Saint Lawrence is part of «Los Faros del Camino», «the Beacons of the Camino», a project of the Palencia Provincial Council that lights up the churches of the Camino villages at night with low-energy LED lights.
