Stage 6: Estella to Los Arcos with Jhonatan Barrios
At 6:40 in the morning, Jhonatan Barrios left the municipal hostel in Estella-Lizarra, beginning his journey toward Los Arcos, 22 km away. The town fell behind him as he followed the scallop shell symbol marking the Camino de Santiago Frances. Shortly after, he reached the wine bridge, where he expected to find the fountain famous for offering either wine or water.
The Bodegas de Irache, one of the oldest wineries in Navarra, were founded in 1891, although Benedictine monks had already been producing wine there since the 10th century. Jhonatan stopped at the Irache wine fountain, tasting the wine at 7:30 in the morning, keeping up the tradition followed by pilgrims.
Continuing on, Jhonatan passed by the monastery of Santa María la Real de Irache, a place of great historical importance on the Camino de Santiago. This monastery, with origins in the 13th century, had served as a pilgrim hospital, a university, a war hospital and a religious school. Although uninhabited since 1985, its medieval, Renaissance and Baroque architecture was still impressive.
Further on, Jhonatan reached Villamayor de Monjardín, where the Fuente de los Moros, a 13th-century medieval cistern, refreshed pilgrims along the way. With 10 km left to Los Arcos, Jhonatan followed the arrows and the pilgrim waymark, enjoying the green scenery and the refreshing wind.
9 km from Los Arcos, Jhonatan stopped to fill his water bottle at a fountain and reflected on the landscapes accompanying him through these stages of the Camino. With 5 km left, he took a photo in the fields before continuing on.
2 km from Los Arcos, Jhonatan pressed on with determination, enjoying the hazy sky. He finally reached the town of Los Arcos, finding cheese and other local products. In front of the Church of Saint Mary, one of the most notable in Navarra, Jhonatan explored the small town, looking for a restaurant or bar for dinner and getting ready for his seventh stage of the Camino, which would take him to Logroño.
