A village of the Valcarce
Pereje, a hamlet of Trabadelo, is a village of stone and slate houses in the valley of the Valcarce river, about five kilometres after Villafranca. The Camino crosses it along its main street, away from the motorway.
It had a medieval pilgrim hospital that led to a long lawsuit: Queen Doña Urraca gave it in 1118 to the monastery of O Cebreiro, and the Cluniac monks of Villafranca claimed it for years, because it lay in their area of influence.
What to see in Pereje?
The church
The small church of Santa María Magdalena, much altered, stands in the centre of the hamlet, beside the Camino.
Hostel
Pereje has a municipal hostel, in a very quiet setting, for those who prefer not to sleep in Villafranca.
There is no shop or ATM; bring what you need from Villafranca.
The Valcarce river
The Valcarce river accompanies the pilgrim along this whole stretch, and in Pereje it flows right beside the village.
Its banks have chestnuts, poplars and alders that give shade in summer.
Festivities
The feast of Santa María Magdalena, in July, brings together the residents and those with roots in the village.
Before the mountains
Pereje is at the start of the valley that leads, kilometre by kilometre, to the great climb to O Cebreiro.
For many pilgrims it is a quiet stop to gather strength.
In short
Pereje is a small hamlet with a curious history, that of the lawsuit over its hospital, on the greenest stretch of the Camino Frances in León.
