The Puente del Paso Honroso was built in the 13th century as part of the old Roman road connecting Legio (Leon) and Asturica Augusta (Astorga). This bridge, with 19 spans, has witnessed history, serving as a key crossing on the Camino de Santiago and as the setting for legendary episodes.

Over the centuries, the bridge has undergone multiple restorations that have ensured its preservation. In 1939 it was declared a Historic-Artistic Monument, placing it in the category of Asset of Cultural Interest. This protection ensures its preservation as part of Spain’s architectural and cultural heritage.

The Tournament of the Paso Honroso

The Tournament of the Paso Honroso took place in the summer of 1434, during a Jacobean Holy Year. It was devised by the Leonese knight Suero de Quinones, a member of a noble family, who requested permission from King John II of Castile to hold a singular tournament. The jousting would take place on the bridge of Hospital de Orbigo, and any knight wishing to cross it had to either take part or leave a glove as a sign of cowardice.

This event became a chivalric feat of great magnitude, not only for its challenge, but also for the romantic reason behind it. Don Suero, who wore a metal collar around his neck as a symbol of his love for Dona Leonor de Tovar, sought to free himself of this burden by making a pilgrimage to Santiago after breaking 300 lances in combat.

The Tournament of the Paso Honroso Unfolds

The tournament ran from July 10 to August 9, 1434, with a single day of rest on July 25, the feast day of Saint James the Apostle. For a month, the kingdom’s finest knights took part in the jousting. Amid solemn masses, feasts and daily duels, a stand was erected beside the bridge to host the event.

Although the tournament was marked by a spirit of nobility and sport, there were also tragic moments. Only one death was recorded, that of the Catalan knight Asbert de Claramunt, who was struck by a fatal lance blow to the eye.

At the end of the tournament, Don Suero and his companions kept their promise by making a pilgrimage to Santiago, where he laid down his collar and a blue ribbon as proof of his love. The ribbon, bearing an inscription attesting to his devotion, is preserved today in the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in the city of Santiago de Compostela.

The Literary and Cultural Legacy of the Puente del Paso Honroso

The Paso Honroso was immortalized in medieval and Renaissance literature. The royal notary Pero Rodriguez de Lena wrote a chronicle of the event, and poets of the time sang of the deeds of Don Suero and his companions. Even Miguel de Cervantes referenced this feat in Don Quixote, praising its authenticity and heroism.

On the bridge, since 1951, a monolith has stood listing the names of the knights who accompanied Don Suero, keeping their memory alive.

The Medieval Jousts of the Paso Honroso Today

Since 1997, Hospital de Orbigo has celebrated the Medieval Jousts of the Paso Honroso every first weekend of June, recreating the legendary feat. This celebration has been declared a Festival of Regional Tourist Interest, drawing thousands of visitors from Spain and abroad.

During the festival, the entire village transforms into a medieval stage. The streets fill with knights, ladies, peasants, jesters and merchants dressed in period costume. Banners, flags and medieval markets adorn the town, creating an immersive experience for attendees.

The event culminates in the Grand Tournament in the jousting yard, where knights clash lances on horseback, reenacting the victory of Suero de Quinones and his group. It is a vibrant spectacle that revives the spirit of the Middle Ages.
