Church of Saint Martin of Tours in Fromista
The Church of Saint Martin of Tours, located in Fromista in Palencia Province, is a gem of full Romanesque style from the 11th century. Its architectural purity and rich iconography make it a landmark of medieval European art and an essential stop on the Camino de Santiago Frances.
History of the Church of Saint Martin of Tours
Commissioned around 1066 by Dona Mayor of Castile, widow of Sancho III of Navarra, the church was part of a now-vanished Benedictine monastery. In 1118, it came under the Cluniac priory of the Monastery of Saint Zoilus in Carrión de los Condes. Over the following centuries, it underwent additions that altered its original structure. In the late 19th century, it was declared a National Monument and restored between 1894 and 1904 by architect Manuel Anibal Alvarez, who removed the added features to restore its original appearance.
Exterior Architecture
The church has a basilica floor plan with three naves, the central one taller and wider than the side ones. Notable features include its three semicircular apses and the octagonal lantern tower over the transept. The west facade is flanked by two cylindrical towers, reminiscent of Germanic Romanesque style. The outer walls display a chequered stone pattern and more than 300 carved corbels depicting human figures, animals and fantastical creatures.
Interior and Sculptural Decoration
The interior, of sober beauty, holds capitals decorated with plant motifs, animals and biblical scenes, such as Original Sin and the fable of “The Fox and the Crow”. Some capitals are attributed to the “Master of the Oresteia”, influenced by classical Greco-Roman art. The lantern tower rests on squinches decorated with the symbols of the four Evangelists.
Importance on the Camino de Santiago
Located on the Camino de Santiago Frances, the church has been a landmark for pilgrims since the Middle Ages. Its inclusion in the 2015 UNESCO World Heritage extension of the Routes of Santiago de Compostela further reinforces its cultural and spiritual significance.
Restoration and Preservation
The late 19th-century restoration removed later additions and recovered the original structure. The most deteriorated capitals and corbels were moved to the Archaeological Museum of Palencia and replaced with reproductions. In 2010, maintenance and restoration work was carried out on the stained-glass windows.
