What is there in Gonzar

Gonzar is a small hamlet and parish in the municipality of Portomarín, in Lugo Province, on the Camino Frances.

After leaving Portomarín and crossing the reservoir again on a footbridge, the Camino climbs for several kilometres along a path beside the road, among pines and eucalyptus, through Toxibó; Gonzar is the first real stop on that day towards Palas de Rei. With fewer than fifty residents, it is a farming hamlet without notable monuments, with its parish church of Santa María, but very practical for pilgrims: it has a public Xunta hostel, open all year, and a private one with an inn, both right on the Camino, and it is usual to have breakfast or a mid-morning break here. Barely a kilometre away lies Castromaior, with its pre-Roman hillfort, one of the most historic points of the stage.

Distances from Gonzar

From Gonzar to Castromaior it is about 1.2 km.

To O Hospital it is about 4.2 km.

And to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, in Santiago de Compostela, about 85.3 km remain.

The parish

The parish of Santa María de Gonzar brings together three places:

  • Gonzar
  • Toxibó
  • A Ferrería, now uninhabited.

Population

The parish has about forty residents, fewer every year, as in so many Galician hamlets.

History

Gonzar has always lived beside the Camino leading to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Santiago de Compostela, and in the Middle Ages it was linked to the Order of Saint John, lord of Portomarín.

Church of Santa María

The parish church of Santa María, of Romanesque origin and much altered, is simple, with stone walls.

Economy

Livestock and farming are still the basis, with the Camino an increasingly important source of income.

Festivities

The main festival is that of Santa María, with Mass and a procession.

In short

Gonzar is a quiet stop after Portomarín, with the hill fort of Castromaior a step away.
