Iglesia de Santiago Apóstol Ledigos

Strategic Location on the Camino de Santiago

Located in the Tierra de Campos region, Ledigos sits at an altitude of 889 metres and covers an area of 28.30 km². Its position on the Camino Frances has been decisive in its historical and cultural development. Over the centuries, it has served as a place of rest and reflection for pilgrims heading to the Catedral de Santiago in Santiago de Compostela.

Church of Santiago Apóstol: A Treasure of the Camino

The Church of Santiago Apóstol is the main monument of Ledigos and a symbol of its pilgrim identity. Set on a small hill, it offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside and the nearby village of Terradillos de los Templarios.

Architectural Features

  • Origin: The present-day church dates from the 17th century, although its origins go back to the 13th century, when it belonged to the church of Santiago de Compostela, after being donated by Queen Doña Urraca to the apostle Santiago.
  • Structure: A single nave, covered with a groin vault and a blind dome over the transept. It has two side chapels.
  • Altarpieces: It houses altarpieces from the 17th and 18th centuries, most notably a crucifix attributed to the sculptor Juan Sáez de Torrecilla.
  • Depictions of Santiago: It is notable for containing images of the apostle in his three guises: pilgrim, apostle and Matamoros (Moor-slayer).

Hospital de San Lázaro: A Vestige of Hospitality

The Hospital de San Lázaro, now gone, was in its time an important refuge for pilgrims. Located next to the Camino, it initially functioned as a leper hospital and was demolished in 1752. Its materials were reused in the construction of the hermitage of Nuestra Señora de Vallejera, located 1.5 km from the present-day hamlet. A stone marker beside the road to Población de Arroyo indicates its location.

Hermitage of Nuestra Señora de Vallejera

This hermitage, rebuilt using materials from the old hospital, is an example of resource reuse and the continuity of devotion in the area. It lies a kilometre and a half from the town centre and is historically linked to the Hospital de San Lázaro.
