What is there in Ledigos

Ledigos is a small municipality in the Tierra de Campos district, in Palencia Province, on the Camino Frances.

It is one of those adobe and rammed-earth villages that define the Palencian Tierra de Campos: houses of mud and straw, the same colour as the fields, and about sixty residents who have seen the population fall to a quarter since the mid-19th century. Its church, dedicated to Saint James the Apostle, has a feature often pointed out: it brings together the three classic depictions of the saint, as pilgrim, as apostle and as Moor-slaying knight, something rare in a single church on the Camino. There was also a hospital of San Lázaro for pilgrims, demolished in 1752, whose stones ended up in other buildings. Just three kilometres away lies Terradillos de los Templarios.

The village

Ledigos lies at 889 metres above sea level and has a municipal area of about 28 km². The Camino Frances crosses it from side to side and has shaped its life for centuries: pilgrims on their way to the Cathedral of Santiago in Santiago de Compostela stopped here.

Church of Saint James the Apostle

The Church of Santiago Apóstol is the village’s great Camino symbol. It stands on a rise overlooking the plain and Terradillos de los Templarios.

What it is like

  • Origin: the present church dates from the 17th century, but in the Middle Ages the place already belonged to the church of Santiago de Compostela.
  • Structure: a single nave with a groin vault, a dome over the crossing and two side chapels.
  • Altarpieces: from the 17th and 18th centuries, with a fine crucified Christ.
  • Saint James, three times: it holds images of the saint as a pilgrim, as an apostle and as Matamoros, the Moor-slayer, which is unusual.

The hospital of San Lázaro

Beside the Camino stood a hospital of Saint Lazarus, first a leper house and then a pilgrim refuge. It was pulled down in 1752 and its stones were used for the hermitage of Vallejera. A marker beside the road to Población de Arroyo shows where it stood.

Traditions

Hermitage of Nuestra Señora de Vallejera

A kilometre and a half from the village, the hermitage of Vallejera was built with materials from the old hospital, and it is still a place of devotion for the residents.

Festivities

The main festival is that of Saint James the Greater, on 25 July. On 15 May the village celebrates San Isidro, patron saint of farmers.
