Toponymy of Calzadilla de la Cueza

The name “Calzadilla” comes from the diminutive of “calzada” (causeway), referring to the old Roman road that runs through the village. “Cueza“, meanwhile, may derive from the Germanic “Goza” or “Gozan”, though it is also linked to the Cueza River flowing through the area, or to “cuezas”, small depressions in the terrain where water collects.

Church of San Martín de Tours

The Church of San Martín de Tours, of medieval origin, has undergone various modifications over the centuries, featuring a rammed-earth and brick structure with a Latin-cross floor plan. Notable features include its three naves, with the central one taller and wider, a pronounced transept crowned by a dome, and a bell-gable. The entrance doorway is a simple round arch.

Monastery of Santa María de las Tiendas

On the outskirts of the village lie the ruins of this monastery and its former hospital, dating from the 12th century. Belonging to the Order of Santiago, it was an important shelter for pilgrims. Although much of its remains were reused in building the church, traces of its existence can still be seen.

Calzadilla de la Cueza on the Camino de Santiago

Calzadilla de la Cueza is a significant stop on the Camino Frances. The village sits in a dip in the terrain, making it invisible until the pilgrim is almost upon it, offering a visual surprise after kilometers of flat plain.
