Video Stage 12: Atapuerca to Burgos | Camino de Santiago Frances with Jhonatan Barrios
Jhonatan Barrios is pleased to share a piece of his experience on the Camino de Santiago Frances, specifically Stage 12, which runs from Atapuerca to Burgos, covering around 20 kilometres. He completed this leg between 26 April and 26 May 2022.
In a video, Jhonatan enthusiastically recounts his adventure on this stage towards Burgos, a journey that took him through places of great historical significance, not just for Spain but for the whole world. Along the way, he had the privilege of getting to know, both inside and out, the Cathedral of Santa María de Burgos, which he considers the most beautiful he has ever had the pleasure of seeing in his life.
Stage 12: Atapuerca to Burgos with Jhonatan Barrios
At 8 in the morning, Jhonatan Barrios left the hostel in Atapuerca bound for Burgos. He was joined by Rafa and Lety, who had walked with him for the previous two stages but were now heading back to Burgos and then on to Madrid for work reasons. Jhonatan, however, would continue on his way, with 19 kilometres still to cover to Burgos. Along the walk, he came across some sheep and began stage number 12 together with Frank. The two of them set off from Atapuerca, a village of historical significance because of the prehistoric sites in the Sierra de Atapuerca, where the remains of Homo antecessor, the oldest known human in Europe, were found, declared a World Heritage Site in 1997.
Jhonatan also recalled that on the Atapuerca plain, at the highest point of the sierra, one of the most important battles between Castilians and Navarrese took place, in which García Sánchez III, king of Pamplona, was killed. This event was crucial to how Spanish territory was divided up in the 11th century.
The stretch towards Burgos was long and tiring, especially crossing the industrial area. On reaching the city, Jhonatan headed towards the majestic Catedral de Burgos, one of the most striking Gothic cathedrals in Spain, built between 1221 and 1260 and declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984. After nearly 20 kilometres, Jhonatan reached the municipal hostel, where he planned to rest and get ready for the next stage of his journey.
In the afternoon, together with Frank and his friend Ángel, both historians, they visited the Catedral de Burgos, where Ángel shared historical details about the city and the cathedral. Jhonatan enjoyed the nightlife in the old town of Burgos before finding something light for dinner and heading back to the hostel to rest and be ready for stage number 13 (Video Stage 13: Burgos to Hornillos del Camino with Jhonatan Barrios).
