History of Hontanas

The earliest signs of settlement in Hontanas date back to the Neolithic/Chalcolithic period, evidenced by archaeological finds at the “Yacimiento Hospital” site. During the Early Middle Ages, the territory was part of the alfoz (administrative district) of Castrojeriz, an administrative structure that contributed to the resettlement and pacification of the region.

The first documented mention of Hontanas dates from 18 August 1203, when King Alfonso VIII granted the town to Arlotho de Marzán, a knight from Gascony. Later, in 1208, the same monarch compelled the Bishop of Burgos, Don Fernando, to acquire the town, thereby consolidating ecclesiastical influence in the area.

Hontanas on the Camino de Santiago

Hontanas has been intrinsically linked to the Camino Frances since its earliest days. Calle Real, the town’s main street, forms part of the medieval Jacobean route. The importance of Hontanas on the Camino is reflected in the existence of hospitals and hostels for pilgrims since the 13th century, such as the Hospital de San Juan, also known as the “Frenchmen’s Inn”.

Monuments and Places of Interest in Hontanas

• Hospital de San Juan: This old medieval hospital, built in the 13th or 14th century, has been restored and converted into a municipal pilgrim hostel (Albergue San Juan Hontanas). Inside, it preserves a Gothic arch that was once part of the original façade, as well as medieval grain silos and a cobbled floor visible through a glass panel in the floor. The building’s renovation has respected its original structure, allowing visitors to appreciate the history held within its walls.
• Ermita de la Virgen de Espinosa: Located about 2 kilometres from the village, at the spot where, according to tradition, the Virgin appeared to a local resident. A pilgrimage was once held here to exchange the Virgen de Espinosa for the Virgen del Rosario.
• Molino del Cubo: Located at a narrow point in the valley, this old mill retains the machinery and the dam that fed it, standing as a testament to the area’s agricultural and milling activity.
• Torre Medieval: Adjoining the church, this defensive tower, built in the 12th-13th centuries, retains arrow slits, a Romanesque window and a spiral staircase leading to the top, from where strategic views of the surroundings could once be had.

• Fiestas de la Inmaculada Concepción: Celebrated on 6, 7 and 8 December, in honour of the village’s patron saint.
• Hoguera de San Roque: On 16 August, a bonfire is lit in honour of San Roque, a tradition that brings the villagers together in a community celebration.
