Stage 16: Frómista to Carrión de los Condes with Jhonatan Barrios
Stage 16 of the Camino Frances, running from Frómista to Carrión de los Condes, is an iconic stretch of between 18 and 19 kilometres. Along this route, pilgrims face challenges such as the scorching sun and fatigue built up over days of walking. Jhonatan Barrios, a determined pilgrim, recounts his experience on this leg, where history, spirituality and nature intertwine with every step.
Waking Up and Setting Off
The morning begins with brilliant sunshine promising a hot day ahead. Jhonatan, after a setback that led him to leave later than planned, prepares himself mentally for the stretch. Aware of a blister on his heel caused by friction from his sock, he has taken precautions: applying ointment to ease the pain before continuing his day, determined to enjoy the route despite the discomfort. His departure is set for 7am, a time many other peregrinos have already made the most of, setting off from the earliest hours of the day.
The Initial Route
As he begins walking, the first challenge Jhonatan faces is walking alongside the road. Although this part of the route can be less appealing than a forest path, it is a common stretch of the Camino de Santiago. Jhonatan watches other pilgrims, some of whom have also chosen this route. The community of walkers becomes a source of motivation, reminding him he is not alone on this journey.
The Journey to Carrión de los Condes
The First Kilometres
The route runs alongside the road, which limits the natural beauty one might expect on this stage. Even so, Jhonatan finds small moments of beauty in nearby sculptures and scenery. As he goes further along the route, the sense of being on an ancient pilgrimage road fills him with nostalgia. He remembers that this road has been walked by thousands of pilgrims throughout history, and feels fortunate to be part of this tradition.
Villalcázar de Sirga
Halfway along, Jhonatan reaches Villalcázar de Sirga, a town known for its rich history and its church of Santa María la Blanca. This 13th-century church is an important point of interest on the route. Jhonatan stops to admire the beauty of the church and reflect on the stories of healing told about the Virgen Blanca, whom many pilgrims have called on for help. This place is not only a landmark on the route, but also a symbol of the spirituality that accompanies every pilgrim.
Arriving in Carrión de los Condes
After several hours of walking, Jhonatan finally catches sight of Carrión de los Condes. This town, an important industrial centre in the Middle Ages, stands out for its cultural heritage. Arriving in Carrión is a relief for Jhonatan, who feels every step was worth it as he takes in the splendour of the place.
Hostel and Rest
Once in town, Jhonatan heads to the Espíritu Santo hostel, known for its hospitality and its history dating back to the 13th century. This place offers refuge that is not only physical, but spiritual too. The warmth of the monks and the peace of the surroundings allow Jhonatan to recharge. Here, pilgrims can share their stories, experiences and, above all, their faith in the Camino.
A Road of Learning
Every stage of the Camino Frances is more than just a stretch of road; it is a journey of self-discovery and learning. Jhonatan understands that difficulties, such as blisters and the heat, are part of the experience, and that every ache is a reminder of his effort and perseverance. The mix of physical effort with moments of contemplation at historical and religious sites is what makes this experience unique.
Looking to the Future
With Stage 16 complete, Jhonatan feels eager to continue his journey towards the next stage. The goal of reaching the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, in Santiago de Compostela, feels more real every day, and although the road is tough, the spiritual reward it promises drives him onward. Jhonatan is ready to face the challenges ahead, armed with the certainty that every step on the Camino de Santiago brings him closer to his destination.
